Coach Chris Palermo tried to rally his troops, by pointing out that - not counting the two games against the Cowboys - the teams had identical records; trying to indicate the playing field might be more level than anticipated.</div> <div> The Cowboys bookended the Bills' schizophrenic season - Buffalo won its first three games, then lost to the Cowboys, lost two more games, then lost to the Cowboys again (for four straight losses), then won its last thee games to end the season.</div> <div> One motivating impetus for the Bills was the loss of leading receiver James Lofton, who had been off to a torrid start - accumulating more than 1000 yards receiving in only seven games. In fact, in Lofton's absence, the playcalling had become more difficult for defenses to target, and the Bills played their best football of the season after Lofton was hurt.</div> <div> Unlike the Bills, Dallas was essentially player-specific. Statistically, Troy Aikman had a better year than league MVP Drew Bledsoe, and Emmitt Smith outrushed the entire Bills team (1079 to 981).</div> <div> Dallas was the most efficient passing team and Buffalo's pass defense was strikingly mediocre. On offense, Dallas ran the second-most during the year, but Buffalo's run defense was dominant. On the flipside, Buffalo's passing was the most prolific - the team accumulated 800 yards more than the second best team - but Dallas' pass defense was overwhelming. Buffalo had the worst run offense in the league and Dallas' run defense was also the worst.</div> <div> Both teams were beat up, with Lofton and Thomas Smith (CB) out for the Bills, and all-pro offensive lineman Larry Allen out for Dallas.</div> <div> Fans showed up expecting a hard-fought battle and an exciting game. They would not be disappointed.</div> <div> The first quarter was a defensive struggle, with teams trading punts, until Buffalo's Steve Christie pushed a field goal through the uprights at the 6:00 mark. When the second quarter began, it saw Dallas matching the field goal with one of its own, at the 13:00 mark. Again, Buffalo fought hard and moved the ball down the field, with a long drive finally capped with a 3 yard Sam Gash run.</div> <div> Then things began to fall apart for Buffalo.</div> <div> A slew of penalties - probably close to 15 for the game - began to rain down on the Bills. Fumbles and interceptions were nullified, and right away, Aikman hit Rocket Ismail for a 72 yard gain, to bring Dallas to the Buffalo 6 yard line. One play later, Aikman connected with Jay Novacek for the score, tying the game at 10. Four minutes later, Richie Cunningham kicked his second field goal, at the 3:00 mark.</div> <div> Buffalo tried to run out the clock, when it appeared they wouldn't be able to move the ball much, but Dallas managed to get it back. The Buffalo defense did hold though, and the teams went into halftime, with Dallas leading, 13-10.</div> <div> In the second half, more of the same, as Buffalo racked up penalty yards. Coach Palermo, in a moment of sheer stupidity, allowed the punter to kick the ball, remaining in bounds. Deion Sanders returned it handily for a touchdown, and a 20-10 lead. This was the third punt return Dallas had scored on Buffalo all year. Reeling, Buffalo recovered enough to see Steve Christie kick another field goal, to cut the lead to 7.</div> <div> In the fourth quarter, the tide turned -- Dallas went three-and-out, and Buffalo stormed back, with Jay Riemersma catching an 11 yard pass from Bledsoe to tie the game at the 11:00 mark. Suddenly, the Buffalo defense came alive -- causing incomplete passes (and causing two Aikman interceptions - when he only had three all season!) and smothering Emmitt Smith (held to 47 yards overall, while Buffalo racked up 171 on the ground). For at least 95% of the game, Buffalo either keyed Smith or double-teamed a receiver -- and in the fourth quarter, it all gelled. Buffalo managed to force Dallas to punt (Toby Gowin's SECOND punt that landed within the 10 yard line, out of bounds) and started on its own 8. Slowly but surely, with backup halfback Kenneth Davis leading the way, Buffalo's offense started to click. 19 yard run by Davis, 12 yard pass to Moulds, Bledsoe scrambles for 7 yards. Even with the play guessed right, Bledsoe connected with Moulds for a 28 yard gain. Facing a 3rd down, on Dallas' 27 yard line, Bledsoe hit Riemersma for 17 yards, to bring the ball to the Dallas 10, and on the next play, with 1:45 left in the game, Bledsoe hit Riemersma for a 10 yard score, giving Buffalo a 27-20 lead.</div> <div> Dallas received the ball again, but the drive stalled after two incomplete passes.
